Warning Issued for Police Impersonation Scam in New Jersey

Law enforcement agencies across New Jersey are warning residents about a phone scam involving fake police officers. Scammers are impersonating law enforcement and demanding personal information or payment from unsuspecting individuals.

Victims have reported receiving phone calls that appear to come from local departments, with the caller claiming there’s an outstanding warrant or unpaid fine. The caller then pressures the person into sending money or providing sensitive personal data.

Officials stress that police departments do not operate in this manner. “If you receive a call like this, hang up and report it immediately,” said a Delran officer.

The scam has affected multiple counties and has become increasingly sophisticated, even spoofing caller IDs to look legitimate. Residents are urged to remain cautious, avoid giving out personal information over the phone, and verify any suspicious call with their local police department.

New Jersey State Police are working with the FBI and local jurisdictions to investigate the origin of these calls and hold perpetrators accountable. If you suspect you’ve been targeted, contact the FTC or local authorities to report the incident.

Community awareness is the strongest defense against such scams. Share this warning with family and friends, especially seniors, who are often targeted.
